Critical Assessment of the International Alliance of Women The International Alliance of Women (IAW) is an international non-governmental organization that works to promote women s human rights around the world, focusing particularly on empowerment of women and development issues and more broadly on gender equality. The basic principle of the IAW is that the full and equal enjoyment of human rights is due to all women and girls. Founded in 1904 and based in Geneva, it is one of the oldest, largest and most influential organizations in its field. It’s comprised of forty-one member organizations involved in the advancement of the human rights of women and girls globally. The IAW has general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is credited to many specialized UN agencies, has participatory status with the Council of Europe and is represented at the Arab League, the African Union and other international organizations. The IAW was formed to help the fight for women’s suffrage. The womenâ€℠¢s suffrage movement was the struggle for the right of women to vote and run for office and is part of the overall women’s rights movement. The suffrage movement in the United States gained prominence with the first women’s rights convention in the world: the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848.
